Most probaly with the line $db_url = 'mysql://root:@localhost/drupal'; I am pretty sure this is wrong but it is the only thing that will get me into drupal with no errors. After runningALTER TABLE tablename CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci; on every affected table, things got back to normal immediately. In the previous posting above, I have already given a dumb solution to an 'Access Denied' problem that you might face immediately after you create a new user account.
